Myron Cope
Not many people outside of Western Pennsylvania have heard of Myron Cope. He was a sports writer for many magazines including sports illustrated, and he was a radio broadcaster/color commentator for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 34 years - longer than any other broadcaster in the country has been linked to a specific professional football team. What was really unique about him was his voice - it was high pitched and slightly whiny. It was a very irritating voice at first, but once you began listening to him, he was so knowledgeable about sports, so funny, and so entertaining, that you would hang on his every word for all 6 hours of his football-Sunday broadcasts. He also used phrases like "yoi", "double-yoi", and "hm-hah", throughout his broadcasts - it sounds like it would be irritating, but he was one of the most entertaining broadcasters I've ever heard. Myron was the inventor of the Terrible Towel - the yellow flag that Steeler fans wave at the games. He made not a dime off of this, but gave all of the proceeds to the Pittsburgh Autism Society. Myron was one of a kind. He was loved throughout Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. When the Steelers would be in public, more people would flock around Myron, the 5'4 whiny-voiced broadcaster, than any of the famous football players. In a way, he was part of the essence of Pittsburgh and its blue-collar love for sports. Myron Cope died this week. Within hours, the local television stations interrupted shows to announce his death, and had competing 1-hour specials that same night celebrating Myron. There was a rally in front of Pittsburgh City Hall today, a few days after his death, and thousands of fans stood outside in a blizzard and listened to the Mayor and the owner of the Steelers talk about Myron. Pittsburgh has lost a part of itself this week, that it will never get back. |
